Liberia, July 4, 2009

While the U.S. celebrates Independence Day, Liberia is awash in turmoil yet again. The civil war (1999 – 2003) that cost the lives of over 200,000 Liberians led to the ousting, arrest and trial of President Charles Taylor and the conviction of his son 'Chuckie' for war crimes. While the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) enjoyed popular support (and were thankful that they weren't Tiberians), Taylor's supporters have never fully embraced the new government. The election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (The Iron Lady) in 2005 caused even more resentment by those loyal to Taylor. Crime is rampant and the economy is in a shambles. And now, Liberia's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has recommended barring President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and 50 other high-profile figures from public office for three decades for supporting armed groups in the country's civil wars. The time has come for revolt!

With support factions of the Forces Nouvelles from Cote d'Ivoire and financial backing from Guinea's Minister of Mining, Osvaldo Mutimbe (under investigation for embezzlement and bribery by mining officials, and in hiding near Mount Wuteve), Taylor's supporters have formed the Liberians for Independence And Reorganization (LIAR)*. An assault is planned on the capital of Monrovia on August 1 that will coincide with an uprising of gangs in the city.

Meanwhile, operating off the coast of Sierra Leon is the USS Mustin with 200 Marines from the Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team (FAST). The FAST has just begun training the ship's VBSS (visit, board, search and seizure) teams. They are immediately dispatched by Pave Hawk helos to protect the US Embassy in Monrovia. Bad timing for LIAR........
